The pervasive adoption of artificial intelligence tools has sparked apprehension among many workers who fear eventual job displacement due to the rapidly advancing technology. However, according to Laurence Liew, director for AI Innovation at AI Singapore, the concern lies not in the anticipated manner. The 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report, jointly released by Microsoft and LinkedIn, reveals that 45% of knowledge workers worldwide harbor anxieties about AI potentially replacing their roles. Liew, speaking at Salesforce’s World Tour Essentials event in Singapore, emphasized a different imminent threat. "AI is not going to replace you," he stated, as reported by Business Today. "You’re going to be replaced by someone who uses AI to outperform you."
Liew further underscored the significance of mastering generative AI tools like Open AI's ChatGPT, emphasizing the need for adept utilization through detailed prompts. "You have to give the AI a lot of context — treat AI like a very hardworking intern that will make mistakes occasionally," he explained. "If you think about it, if you’re [asking] an intern to do something, it won’t be one sentence. The intern would probably be scratching their head on what to do." The report also highlights a notable surge in the adoption of AI tools among knowledge workers globally, nearly doubling over the past six months, with 75% acknowledging their utilization.
