Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, known for his hardline stance and considered a potential successor to the nation's elderly supreme leader, perished in a helicopter accident, according to Iranian state media on Monday.

The state-run media reported Raisi's death along with that of Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other officials who were also on board the helicopter.

The media did not immediately disclose the cause of the crash. However, it was noted that the helicopter went down in foggy weather in a mountainous region in the northwest of Iran, close to the Azerbaijan border. Raisi had been attending a dam inauguration ceremony with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev.
