Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz on Thursday attended the passing out parade ceremony for female police officers in a cop uniform at the Police Training College in Lahore.
The first woman CM donned a police uniform in a powerful gesture of support for female cops.
While addressing the ceremony, she announced a plan to increase the number of women in the police force, aiming for them to make up half of all officers.
However, her positive gesture towards the female cops could land her in jail for three years or she could face a fine of Rs100,000.
According to the Police Order 2002, the use of police uniforms without authorisation is a punishable crime under clause 151.
"If any person not being a member of the police wears without authorisation, the uniform of police or any dress having the appearance or bearing any of the distinctive marks of police uniform, he shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine up to one hundred thousand rupees, or with both," the law read.
On the other hand, a citizen has approached the district and sessions court in Lahore to file a case against CM Maryam Nawaz for wearing a police uniform.
However, it is unclear yet whether Nawaz Sharif's daughter has obtained a license or permit from the provincial law enforcement department for wearing a police uniform or not.
